Book review: Just Sew Stories
Here at Mollie Makes we just can’t get enough of Katie Allen’s Just Sew Stories. We love it so much that it even comes free with a subscription. It all about crafting kapow!
Just Sew Stories, published by Hardie Grant, showcases Katie’s irresistible mix of quirky fabric projects and personal tales of crafty highs and lows. Each intro raises a smile with her chatty and relatable style, and what really shines through is her encouragement to just have a go. “I could make that,” is her opening statement, and who hasn’t muttered those words while shopping for accessories or homewares, placing items back on the shelf because, really, who wants to pay £40 for a lightly embellished cushion?
Katie’s on our wavelength and reassures us that our makes don’t need to be perfect and instructions don’t need to be followed to the letter. Furthermore, Just Sew Stories is so beautifully styled and fun to dip in and out of that it sparks off all sorts of creative tangents and ways to make each idea your own. Having said that, instructions are there if you want to do just as she’s done, as well as some handy How Tos on basic stitching and the tools you’ll need to get started.
At 160 pages, there are 25 projects in total, catering to all skill levels. ‘Easy as Pie’, ‘Get Your Craft On’ and ‘Crafty Minx’ chapters take us from quirkily embroidered hankies to appliquéd Frida Kahlo cushions (a firm favourite), and the ‘It’s a Wrap’ section at the end shares some sweet ways to present your handmade gifts to friends and family. A special shout out has to go to the “landlord-defying pet cushions” too – such a great idea!
Fabulous design direction sees chevrons and quirky overhead shots a-plenty, with Katie sharing her favourite bits and pieces in gorgeously styled colour-themed collections. We also get a sneak peek into her scrapbooks and crafting playlists. Even without the projects, it’s welcomed eye-candy.
Altogether cool, colourful and a must-have addition to the craft-room bookshelf.
