Free crochet pattern: chunky crochet storage tubs

We’ve got a free pattern for you to create your own chunky crochet storage tubs, to tidy up all those loose bits and bobs in your home.

Looking for a place to store your supplies? Look no further! These two free crochet patterns will help you keep everything neat and tidy. Hook matching storage tubs in sizes that measure approximately 7cm x 6.5cm and 6cm x 6cm. They’re small enough for popping on your sewing table or desk but big enough for storing bits and bobs that don’t have a home.

You’ll need

• A 1kg (2.2lbs) cone of recycled cotton cord. This will be enough to make 1 large and 1 small storage tub
• 10mm (UK 000, US N/15) crochet hook
• Darning or tapestry needle with a large eye

Step one

crochet-basket-pattern-step-1 Make a ‘magic loop’ by winding the yarn around two fingers. Insert the hook under the first strand and pull up a loop from the second strand. Once the first round is complete you can pull the tail end of yarn to close up the hole a bit.

Step two

Ch 1, 6 dc into loop, ss to the first ch to join. [6 sts] These are the hardest to work with the thick cotton. Check you have the correct number of stitches after each round, and do not count the slip stitch or the first chain when working into the stitches.

Step three

crochet-basket-pattern-step-3 Ch 1, 2 dc into each st, ss to join. [12 sts].
Step four

crochet-basket-pattern-step-4Ch 1, *1 dc in next st, 2 dc in next st; rep from * another five times, ss to join. [18sts].

Step five

crochet-basket-pattern-step-5Ch 1, *2 dc, 2 dc in next st; rep from * another 5 times, ss to join. [24sts] If making the small basket skip to step 7.

Step six
crochet-basket-pattern-step-6Ch 1, *3 dc, 2 dc in next st; rep from * another 5 times, ss to join. [30sts].

Step seven

crochet-basket-pattern-step-7Ch 3 and count this as an extra st. Work the following round with a treble in each st in the back loops only, starting with the first st of the previous round. Ss to the third ch at the beginning of the round to join. [31(25)sts].

Step eight
crochet-basket-pattern-step-8Rep step 7 another 3(2) times, by counting the first ch 3 as the first st, then tr 30(24), working in both loops of the st. [31(25)sts]. For the large basket you will have four rounds in total, and three rounds for the small basket.

Step nine

crochet-basket-pattern-step-9Ch 3 (counts as st), 5(3)tr, ch 5, skip 5 sts, 10(8)tr, ch 5, skip 5 sts, 5(3)tr, ss to the third ch at the beginning of the round to join.

Step ten
crochet-basket-pattern-step-10Ch 1 (doesn’t count as st), 6(4)dc, 5 dc into the space left by the ch, 10(8)dc, 5 dc into the space, 5(3)dc, ss to the ch at the beg of the round to join. Fasten off with a tail of 10cm. Split cord into three & sew each one into the stitches on the wrong side of the tub.
