Use the felt from your craft stash or the goodies provided in your free pom pom necklace kit in Mollie Makes 69 (out on Thursday, 21 July) to make this abstract felt scalloped necklace…
This month your copy of Mollie Makes 69 comes with a free pom pom necklace craft kit packed with die-cut felt circles, a silver chain, beads and more. For those of us already in possession of a pom pom necklace, our team of talented makers have whipped up a few bonus ways to use your craft kit! Choose from either a felt bouquet, pastel drop mobile or scandi-inspired quick-stitch cushion – find all these tutorials in the free project book also inside Mollie Makes 69.
Since we couldn’t fit all their ideas in the project book, today we’re featuring the extra DIY necklace tutorial by Laura Howard here on the blog. Grab your issue on Thursday then pop back here to make this scalloped felt necklace. Enjoy! x
How to make a DIY scalloped felt necklace
Snip the necklace chain in half using a pair of pliers, then trim each section of the chain to 22.5cm (9″), measuring from each jump ring.
Position the cut ends of the necklace chain onto one of the felt circles, so that you can fold a third of the circle over it in the next step. Sew the end few links of the chain securely to the felt with white sewing thread, sewing into the felt but not through it.
Fold the top third of the circle down over the chain and hold in place. Back stitch a vertical line of small stitches down the centre of the folded section.
Fold another circle and place it below the first, sewing the two pieces together with more backstitches. Continue to add more circles in alternating colours until you have a row of six folded circles. Finish your stitching neatly at the back.
Add more rows to the necklace. For each row, start by sewing the necklace chain to the felt with a few stitches then repeat step four to create rows with alternating colours and varying numbers of circles (six, five and four, working outwards).
