‘Don’t be tempted to overlook the importance of good photos. Good quality photographs with lots of natural light, in focus and on an appropriate background will attract customers to your listings. The Etsy Seller Handbook has lots of good tips in this area’ – Etsy seller, Sweet Petite Kids
Spread the word
Shouting about your new venture is crucial! Start with your personal social media channels and as your business grows, develop separate channels to speak directly to your fans. Pick the platform you are most comfortable with and focus on that to start with. Creating a calendar of content for each month can really help.
Etsy seller, Little Stamp Store advises: ‘Always link to a picture. Make sure the picture tells a story, people like stories. Don’t be scared to share a bit of your workspace or home life too.’ Etsy seller, Delphine and Max balances an active social media presence with offline promotions – ‘nice touches like a business card that’s worth keeping, cute packaging to make everything feel more personal and meeting customers at craft fairs’. ‘Titles are so important, make sure they are descriptive and in line with what you think people might search for, do your research and see what currently comes up… Make use of the tags too and add as many as are relevant.’ – Etsy seller, Evie Michelle Shop
When customers search online, search engines will return your item if words used in your description match those in the search. On Etsy, you can use these ‘keywords’ in your titles and tags. Generate your keywords by writing down all words that could describe your item. What words would a friend use to describe your product? What would they type into a search engine? ‘Read every last bit of the Etsy Seller Handbook. I still refer to it all the time and it’s an invaluable tool for making my Etsy shop a success.’ – Etsy seller, Sweet Petite Kids
