Crafts for kids: Craft ideas for toddlers to tweens

As Mollie contrib, Olivia Gordon notes in Mollie Makes 64 that crafting with children can often be rather dramatic! Aside from making sure paint stays on the paper (instead of the walls, the carpet, or in little mouths), crafting with younguns can sometimes feel like herding cats. Someone usually ends up in tears (and more often than not, it’s Mummy). But the benefits far outweigh a few minutes of tears and tantrums (yup, still talking about Mummy), as it’s great for their hand-eye coordination, creative imagination and hey, it’s always good to have a crafty ally when it’s time to do some yarn shopping, eh?

“What this?” “It’s for the baby, honest!”

So with that in mind, here are some of our favourite crafty ideas for making with the munchins…

Kids can make it…

Crafts for kids | Project ideas

1. Baby painting

It’s not often you find a baby who absolutely adores tummy time. Get them interested in this important developmental method of torture exercise with this nifty paint idea. Just plop a load of paint and some paper inside a zip-lock bag (make sure you’re confident about that lock!), and let little one experiment with the squidgy paint.

If they’re really not into being on their front, once they’re highchair-ready, you can put strips of masking tape (or modge podge) down, have them squish the paint around a bit then peel it back – you’re left with a piece of mini-Mondrian-ish modern art.

2. Wrapping paper

Once they’re a bit more dexterous, why not let them have the reins with the paint brush, or crayons, and have them doodle all over some brown paper? Then just pop on a ribbon or pom-pom, and you’ve got yourself some modern art-esque wrapping!

3. Weaving

Older kiddos will enjoy finding their favourite colours and making pretty patterns, and this is a handy one for using up bits of your yarn stash too. Is it wrong to want them to make it for our room?

4. Finger knitting

What a good way to introduce them to yarny crafts! No needles or hooks needed, and once you get the technique, you’d be surprised how easy it is, and how fast the fabric knits up. Create super-cool decorations like this, or make a chunky scarf.

1. Heart mobile

There’s nothing like a good feltie project to keep little fingers busy, and this heart mobile would make any mini-peep’s pad look pretty blummin cool. Simple enough for them to stitch too, with a little help from you.

2. Rainbow collage

Have your little one go on a mini treasure hunt – finding bits according to colours and then sorting them for a rainbow wall hanging. Trust us, this is one craft that is sure to keep little minds occupied for more than long enough for you to put your feet up with a warm beverage.

3. Pom pom pinecones

Head out into the wide outdoors, and get collecting pinecones. A quick scrub and dry, and they’re ready for decorating. Nab a bag of mini pom-poms from your local poundshop, and you’re sorted. Hang em on the Christmas tree, or string them up as a garland for little’s room.

4. Washi tape rain sticks

Rain sticks are a great one for stimulating your baby’s tracking skills. They love the sound, and will follow the brightly decorated tubing. And hey, this wouldn’t be a Mollie blog post without a touch of washi tape!

Fabric wigwam

Every tween’s dream cubbie is a wigwam, right? Yes, they can be pricey, but you can make your own with some fabric scraps and thick bamboo from the garden centre. There’s also this yarn-wrapped wonder we couldn’t resist showing you.
