Keep your keys safe with this clever birdhouse and keyring duo from Pygmy Cloud
No more searching around the house for your keys – this chirpy bird will keep them safe for you. Make this pretty paper-covered birdhouse for your hallway, or as a quirky new home gift for a friend.
You will need:
• Thin card
• Felt in baby blue, turquoise, olive green, red, yellow and black
• Wrapping paper
• Stranded cotton
• Embroidery needle
• Washi tape
• Copydex glue
• UHU glue
• Craft knife/hole punch
• Stanley knife
How to make the bird house
Cut a base from card, using the birdhouse base template. Make sure the smallest hole is the right size for a pencil to fit snugly. This will act as the perch. Cut your chosen pretty paper approximately 1cm larger than your template. Stick onto the card template using Copydex glue.
Using the hammer and nail, punch holes 1cm apart along the edges that will join together. Use the template as a guide.
Using a Stanley knife, carefully cut a pencil to 13cm long and wrap around an even layer of decorative washi tape. Slot the pencil into the small hole in the front of the birdhouse to check it fits.
Cut a card roof shape using the template. Now cut strips of felt in two shades of blue and snip a scalloped effect along one side of each of the strips. Glue the scalloped strips to the roof, overlapping the layers and alternating the colours as you go. Once you’re done, fold the roof across the centre and glue onto the base using strong UHU glue.
How to make the bird keyring
Cut a bird shape out of card using the template. Make sure the pencil fits loosely through the hole in the middle.
Cut the felt slightly larger than the card and snip tabs along all the edge so you can fold and glue the felt in place. Cut slits in the felt where the hole is and push the felt inside to give it a nice neat finish.
Cut a second felt bird using the same template. Sandwich a looped piece of ribbon between the two bird layers and glue together.
Cut out a felt beak, wing and a small dot for an eye, and glue in place on the bird. Loop the keyring onto the ribbon to finish.
