How to get the vintage look (part 8): Christmas

Vintage and Christmas go together like sleigh bells and snow. There’s something special about digging out the boxes of old decorations for the tree or crafting something pretty for the festive season. And at this time of year, the sparklier the better…

1. Door delights

Nothing says ‘hello, Christmas!’ like a wreath on your door or your wall. Put your own twist on it with a homemade, vintage-style wreath. We love this crazy kitsch wreath made with tinsel, baubles and old ornaments. Or why not get out the yarn for a pom-fest wreath like this one?

2. Mix it up

Christmas is the best time for unwrapping your favourite decs and mixing them up with some handmade lovelies. Give a mantlepiece (or a shelf) a modern vintage edge like this blogger with felt garlands, thrift store finds and an anything-goes festive colour scheme.

3. Make some art

Turn scraps of vintage fabric (we’re thinking seasonal tea towels) into pretty hoop art. Painting the hoops themselves adds an extra seasonal touch. We think they make nice gifts, too. Find the instructions here.

4. Card crazy

Sending a Whatsapp just isn’t enough – show your besties how much you really care with a handmade card. Or support Sarah Hamilton’s Just a Card campaign and buy from a maker- like this lovely linoprint card from Amanda Colville.

6. Keep it simple

Kitsch and glitter not your thing? Some simple snowflakes add a hint of festivities without going too cray with the decoration. We love this wall hanging from The Crafted Sparrow.

7. Stockings surprise

Shh, Santa’s coming! Make sure your stockings are ready for all the goodies. We love this super-simple crochet stocking – check out the DIY from Yvestown. These embroidered stockings will add a traditional look to your fireplace – find the DIY here. Our latest stocking project has a pocket and a personalised owl mascot – cute, right? Download this issue now or buy from large supermarkets before 11 December.

8. Scandi charm

Did someone mention Scandi? The land of ice and snow is one of our favourite inspos for Christmas time. Adopt the Scandi vintage look with hygge vintage blankets and understated candles on your tree.

9. Tree tops

The Christmas tree has to be one of our favourite parts of the Christmas celebrations. Dig out a silver fakie (like your nana used to have) and spangle it with some of your bauble beauties.

Have to have a real tree? Let the branches speak for themselves with simple pompom and crochet decs, plus an array of carefully wrapped presents arranged underneath of course. Find more Christmas decoration inspiration here.

Or switch things up by painting an old pallet like this DIY. Hang with decorations for an urban twist on a traditional tree, with no pine needles to sweep up afterwards!

10. Keep it hanging

No time or space to go fully vintage? Just choose a few of your favourite little ornaments and hang them from an upcycled coat hanger a la Dottie Angel. Then switch them up whenever you fancy a change. Super cute!
