The Handmade Fair pick of the week: Geo Fleur

The Handmade Christmas Fair is just a month away and we’re excited to introduce you to one of Kirstie Allsopp’s summer fair favourites, geo-fleur. We catch up with founder Sophie today to find out more about what a typical day at geo-fleur looks like, her inspiration and how being made redundant doesn’t have to be scary.

We have more macramé and geometric swoon time planned in at the first Handmade Christmas Fair next month, but first, meet a succulent’s best friend…

geo-fleur specialises in beautiful geometric homewares, including indoor terrariums filled with cacti and succulents; leather, brass and copper hanging planters; ceramic vessels; glass air plant hangers; angular wire candle holders and hand-poured soy candles – all perfect for keeping urban homes gorgeously green.

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

As soon as my alarm goes off (7am sharp; early riser) I’m straight on Instagram to see what has been happening over night – I’m an Insta-addict! Usually I’ll upload a photograph I took in my shop the day before then get ready and head to our shop in Walthamstow. Before I open the doors to our walk-in customers I’ll go through orders which have come in from our Etsy and Not On The High Street store. During the day while the shop is open I’ll be busy making our macramé or leather and brass plant hangers.

Who inspired you to start doing what you do?

My mum is a fabulous florist and has always inspired me to style and curate beautiful objects together. After a weekend trip to Copenhagen I fell in love with the Scandinavian way of life and the effortless style of everything in their homes, from their candle sticks, to their plants.

Having a lovely Victorian house in East London without a garden meant I started collecting cacti and succulents and potting them up in different styles of geometric planters. It occurred to me that so many other people were in this boat, so I started #KeepYourUrbanHouseGreen a hashtag to encourage urban dwellers to fill their homes with lots of cacti, ferns and succulents.

This led to doing a terrarium commission for my friend’s wedding, other people were smitten with it and asked me to do something similar for them, too. When I was made redundant from my job at the time I thought, why not, let’s do geo-fleur full time!

What do you love most about running your own business?

I love the daily interaction with all these beautiful plants and being surrounded by beautiful objects. I studied abstract painting at Westminster University so I love making a good mess, just as well because recently most things are covered in paint or soil. I also love the interaction with our lovely customers and online followers. I get excited when they share pictures using #geofleur because it means that my dream is coming true! All these things inspire me to do more of what I’m doing, and to continue to encourage others to fill their homes with lovely geometric wares.

What new projects are you currently working on?

I’m a huge fan of Christmas and can’t wait to start our Christmas campaign and our alternative Christmas wreath workshops born from a wonderful partnership with the Town Hall Hotel in Bethnal Green.
