Lenslight – £1.49
Lenslight is a great app for adding flares, bokeh or light leaks. You can add these in more filter-driven apps, but Lenslight has a much bigger selection of effects than the others we’ve seen. It’s a little on the blokey side, design-wise, but still a great photo editing app.

 Snapseed – £Free
We like to think of this one as Photoshop Elements for your iPhone. Snapseed enables you to brighten, boost saturation, sharpen and antique it up. Lots of options to make your photos tons better before you put them through another app like Instagram. The frames are gorgeous in Snapseed too. One annoyance is being unable to save images at different resolutions.

PicTapGo – £1.49
Speed is key with PicTapGo! Awesome filters and ways to concoct your own ‘recipes’ of your favourites mixed together. PicTapGo shows you all your options at once and you can vary the level of filter with a swipe. The only drawback is too much choice! Which, ironically, makes it slow to use (for us indecisive types anyway!)

PicFrame – £0.69

PicFrame offers a huge amount of mosaiced frames to choose from with all manner of tessellated rectangles and squares to show off multiple snaps at once. The rounded corner option adds the retro feel, but it’s a shame there aren’t more circular or triangular options. PicFrame can also be a little fiddly.

Snapster – £Free

Instagram’s more retro sidekick, Snapster offers a massive selection of frames, filters and light effects. You have to pay for the best bits of it but Snapster is a lot of fun to play with.

Hipstamatic – £1.49
Hipstamatic is the original! We loved this two phones ago but it hardly gets used now, which is a shame actually. Hipstamatic is not as quick as other phone apps, but it offers a shooting experience much more like actually using a vintage camera. And: large images. Great for printing.

Over – £1.49 & Overgram – £Free 
THE best photo editing app for font lovers. Overgram and its paid-for big sis, Over, are brilliant tools for making your own photo messages and Pinterest-worthy quote boards. It’s a little fiddly when you start using multiple layers, and the best fonts will cost you, but we love it!

A Beautiful Mess – £0.69
The A Beautiful Mess app is the brand new photo editing app by Elsie Larson and Emma Chapman. A Beautiful Mess enables you to apply filters, hand-drawn borders, text, doodles and phrases to personalise your images. Its interface is intuitive and gorgeous, but its in-app purchases (69p per additional pack of fonts, symbols, borders and phrases) will be off-putting for some.
