Oh the weather outside is frightful… Sadly you don’t have an open fire, snow hasn’t settled in East Anglia for 2 years and you’re not entirely sure what to do with chestnuts (we’re certainly not). Sometimes winter brings greige skies, muddy puddles and a feeling of gloom. Fear not, dear crafter. Grab yourself a quilt or blanket, a pot of tea and a cake or three, fetch a hook, yarn and scissors and follow this recipe for gentle, doily-ish scalloped woolly joy.

The repetitive movements of your hands and eyes as you make these little lacy half mandalas release feel good chemicals in your brain. It’s true! (Read all about it on page 38 in my Craft Away Winter Blues article in Mollie Makes 61, out 10 December.) A pennant a day helps to keep the winter drabs away! When you’ve finished hooking a little pile of them, join them into a garland your neurons will thank you for – it’s a spot of Spring in December.

Please note: this pattern is written in uk crochet terms. Abbreviations: slip stitch (sl st), chain (ch), double crochet (dc), half treble crochet (htr), treble crochet (tr).

Dc: insert hook, yarn over, pull through, yarn over, pull through both loops on hook
Htr: yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull through, yarn over pull through all three loops on hook
Tr: yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull through, yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through final two loops on hook.
