How to crochet rainbow shoe laces for the #RainbowLaces campaign

Whip up a pair of crochet rainbow shoe laces and show your support for the Rainbow Laces campaign – challenging homophobia in football.

The movement (backed by the charity Stonewall, Paddy Power, Metro and the Premier League) kicks off this weekend as footballers across England sport rainbow-coloured laces as part of their second annual anti-homophobia campaign.

Rainbow Laces Campaign - Make crochet shoe laces

Now, thanks to La Messer‘s crochet laces tutorial, you can show your support with a pair of rainbow laces of your own – handmade of course! Read more about the campaign and find other ways to get involved at Use #rainbowlaces to join the conversation – and don’t forget to tag @molliemakes in your colourful shoe shots.

These laces are made using basic chain and slip stitches, so they’re a perfect beginner project. We’ve used variegated yarn to create a rainbow finish, but you could make them in a single coloured yarn too if you fancy.

You will need:

• 1 ball of variegated yarn (we used Sirdar Snuggly Smiley Stripes, but Cotton DK will work, too)
• 4mm crochet hook
• Yarn needle
• Scissors

Ch – Chain
Sl St – Slip Stitch
St – Stitch

Notes on Construction:

Ch151 is roughly 95cm, with loose chains. The tension used for your chains will effect the length of your laces. To make sure your laces are smooth, take care not to twist your crochet chain as you work.
