Problems:

I’m stuck in an issue, how do I get out?

If you close the issue while in the middle of reading it, the next time you open the Newsstand app it’ll open the issue where you left off. To close the issue click ‘OPEN’ at the bottom of the page to reveal the navigation bar, then click ‘CLOSE’ at the bottom right-hand corner to close the issue. Clicking the ‘CLOSE’ button at the top closes the navigation bar.

I can’t subscribe, every time I click the ‘1 Month’ subscription button it fails.

This is probably due to an internet connection. Check that you’re connected and try again.

I can’t download the new issue, what’s up with that?

If you’re still having problems here are a few troubleshooting tips for download related difficulties:

  • Make sure you have sufficient storage space on your device
  • Only download one issue at a time
  • Try a different Wifi connection
  • Do not close the app while downloading as this will halt the download
  • To resume stuck downloads. Power off your device by holding down the power button (a hard reset – wait for ’slide to power off’ message and power off). Then turn it back on. Go to the ‘Help‘ section within the magazine app and tap ‘Restore Purchases‘. Once that’s done, go back to the ‘Buy‘ screen this should resume your downloads

I can’t hear sound from the videos

Check the volume setting is turned on or up. If that doesn’t help, try using headphones. If you can hear sound with headphones, then you just need to adjust a setting on your device, which is currently muting audio. From the home screen, Settings > General. Under ‘Use Side Switch to:‘, select ‘Mute‘. Then flip the side switch on, then off. To change the to lock rotation, under ‘Use Side Switch to:’, select ‘Lock Rotation‘.

How do I delete the app or magazine issues?

You can delete magazine apps from the main Apple Newsstand bookshelf by tap and holding the icon thumbnail until it begins to shake. To delete an individual magazine issue. From within the magazine app, go to the ‘Library‘ and tap ‘Edit‘.

Free trial subscription explained

Once you have taken a subscription, it provides the same access to issues as a regular Newsstand subscription. Whereby you can download the latest published issue right away, plus any new issues published during this initial trial subscription period. For example, where it says ‘Get 5 free issues‘, this means, the current (latest) issue and then 4 further new issues that will be released over the course of your free trial period. Once your trial period has expired, your subscription will automatically renew until you cancel the subscription on your device. I’m interested in subscribing to Gathered by Mollie Makes, but auto renew doesn’t do it for me

Before you buy you can preview the issue by clicking the ‘Look Inside’ button. You can also buy one issue at a time for £1.49/$1.99/€1.79, too. Rest assured that, though, if you buy a monthly subscription, you will receive an email from Apple.com reminding you that your account will be charged. The same goes for a year’s subscription (you’ll receive an email each year).

I’ve signed up but where are my 5 free issues?

You’ve taken out a trial subscription – the next four issues will be available to download free as part of it. So if you’ve got issue 14, your free issues will be 15, 16, 17 and 18.

It says I get 5 free issues at no charge, but I need to subscribe to collect my free issues. How does it work?

You do need to click the ‘1 Month’ or ‘1 Year’ purchase button to receive the 5 free issues, but you will not be charged if you cancel the subscription before the trial period is over. So be sure to cancel auto renewing as soon as the 5th issue is released. Read more on how to cancel your subscription below.

How do I turn off auto renew or find out how long is remaining on my subscription?

At the time of purchase of any subscription on Apple Newsstand, the user is shown a popup during the purchase process that expresses that the subscription is automatically set to auto renew (this message is also reflected on your email receipt). Auto renewal can be turned off at any time by the user. These settings can be found here on your device:

1) From the home screen, select ‘Settings‘, then ‘ iTunes & App Store‘ (For pre iOS 6 > ‘Store‘).

2) Tap on your ‘Apple ID:‘ on the top of the right-hand panel (you may need to scroll down on iOS 5 and below).

3) Select ‘View Apple ID‘

4) Scroll down to and select ‘Manage‘, under ‘Subscriptions‘.

How much does Gathered by Mollie Makes cost?

The terms of subscription are 1 month and 1 year and your subscription will start with the latest available issue.

Individual issues are priced at:
Single issue £1.49 / $1.99 / €1.79

With subscription prices at:
1 month £2.99/ $4.99 / €4.49
1 year £19.99 / $28.99 / €25.99

Tell me more about the payment structure

• Payment will be charged to your iTunes Account once your free trial expires
• Your subscription automatically renews unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current subscription or free trial period
• You will be charged for renewal within 24 hours prior to the end of the current period, for the same duration and at the current subscription rate for that product
• You can manage your subscriptions and turn off auto-renewal by going to your Account Settings after purchase

I have subscribed to Gathered by Mollie Makes on my iPad, can I get it on my iPhone too?
Yup! You get it automatically from the latest issue, and – depending upon whether you have the option to sync apps across all devices checked in iTunes – it will automatically download to your iPhone.

Why is Gathered by Mollie Makes only available for iPad users?

Here’s a note from our Publishing Director, Stuart about the practicalities of publishing Gathered by Mollie Makes for the iPad.

“We’d love for Gathered by Mollie Makes to be available for Android & iPhone users, and we are working on making that happen.

However, it’s not practical or possible for the Android version to be out at the same time as the Apple version, for a number of reasons including:

  • Gathered by Mollie Makes is optimised for the screen size it’s used on; supporting different screen sizes means redesigning the page for each size, and there are LOADS of different screen sizes in Android. This adds hugely to the cost of production.
  • Apple has a global magazine store to sell Gathered by Mollie Makes. There is no global Android mag store – in fact in the UK where we’re based there is no Android mag store at all right now.
  • The Android mag stores which are in development or are out in the US have restrictions on content which in some cases would make Gathered impossible to make for them…”

    I really like Gathered. Short, sweet, and very interesting to read and try the projects.
    Regarding the five free issues, I wish the in-app instructions made it clearer that you must wait until AFTER you receive the fifth issue to turn off auto-renew, and that you couldn’t choose back issues as your free issues. I only found that out now when I stumbled upon THIS site. I am disappointed and feeling rather sour about the experience, especially given that I must deal with Apple’s “Customer Service” regarding any billing issues that arise.
