La Rosa: Vintage camping style

Summer’s coming, yes it is! And don’t let anyone tell you any different. We’re excited about summer days, possibly a weekend away, or at least a day off. We’ve found somewhere we’d like to go, because it’s rather wonderful and eccentrically vintage… We just can’t keep this one a secret, even though we tried!

This is La Rosa campsite in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, near Whitby. We just fell in love with this quirky campsite the minute we saw it, so time to take a peep behind closed doors…

La Rosa‘s fantastic caravans and yurts are all decorated with thrifted and vintage finds.

The camp site was set up by Amanda Boorman after adopting her daughter, and fostering her younger brother. Amanda soon realised that, to bring her children up in a peaceful and therapeutic environment, she needed a complete lifestyle change. After an article in The Times about the difficulties faced by adoptive parents, Amanda received an anonymous donation which was to be her saviour. She bought a yurt and a caravan, and began to tour festivals with a pop-up vintage cafe selling homemade cakes. When finally it was time to put down roots, she remortgaged her home and found the location for the campsite near Whitby. Amanda has spent years thrifting, and all the props, furniture and decoration were found in second-hand stores and charity shops. Even the caravans have been bought from lay-bys and ebay.

Amanda’s aim was create a haven for families, to create a perfect escape with all the adventure of an Enid Blyton storybook. La Rosa campsite is in a fab location, with beautiful countryside on your doorstep and Whitby in easy reach. Whitby, being just the traditional Victorial seaside town we love (ice-cream cones, cliffs and Count Dracula!), it’s on our list of places to go, places to stay. Besides, who could resist a night or two in that delectable pink caravan, or the ramshackle toadstool caravan. And you’ll definitely pick up some vintage style tips while you’re there.

Or for those who dream of running away to the circus, perhaps the ringmaster’s tent is the right option…

If you’re more inclined for comfort than camping, there’s even La Rosa Hotel. Visit La Rosa website for more information and photos.
